As spring approaches, we celebrate fashion mentor Iris Apfel. At 84, she received a life-changing call from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For six decades, Iris and her husband Carl ran Old World Weavers, restoring fabrics for prestigious clients, including the White House. However, her true masterpiece was her personal wardrobe.
Born in 1921 in Astoria, Queens, Iris grew up between her father's glass business and her mother's fashion boutique. She developed a passion for collecting unique pieces from thrift shops and antique stores, a habit she maintained throughout her life.
While sourcing rare textiles worldwide, Iris acquired items others overlooked, such as tribal jewelry and vintage couture, mixing them into bold, unconventional outfits. Her style defied fashion norms, emphasizing that style is invented, not bought. Her unique collection attracted the Met's attention, leading to the "Rara Avis" exhibition, making Iris the first non-designer to have her clothing displayed there. At 84, she became a sensation, challenging the fashion industry's conventions.
Iris distinguished fashion from style, emphasizing originality and courage. She embraced her unique look, famously stating "more is more." Her fame grew, leading to a documentary, a modeling contract, and collaborations with major brands. Married for 67 years, Iris and Carl chose not to have children, focusing on their work and influencing millions. Iris inspired people of all ages to embrace their individuality and reject societal constraints. Iris Apfel lived to 102, proving creativity and beauty transcend age and conventional standards. Her life was a testament to living unapologetically and authentically.
